5 Don’ts in Digital Marketing

If you’ve run a business or led a marketing department for any time at all, you have no doubt been bombarded with plenty of “advice.” Everyone has an opinion on how to get results in the digital space and will give you any number of suggestions for how to bolster rankings and get leads. But few talk about key things to avoid.

Truthfully, there is more than one way to skin a cat. There are various methods that can work well in a digital marketing strategy, but there are a few things you should absolutely avoid regardless of your strategy. Let’s talk about the top 5 “don’ts” for digital marketing!

Don’t stuff keywords

Many marketers, and even some marketing agencies, attempt to bolster rankings by simply stuffing any content they write with relevant keywords, at the expense of producing truly quality content. In recent years, Google has adjusted its algorithm to take a more well-rounded assessment of what content is or isn’t relevant. Instead of just searching for relevant keywords, Google’s AI actively searches for well-written content that provides constructive information to an end user. In other words, Google’s AI reads content much more like a person than a robot, so it’s important to write distinctly human copy.

Don’t waste money on costly platforms

In the explosion of digital commerce over the last fifteen years, numerous companies have developed software systems, keyword research tools, and advertising tools to try and help business owners and marketers put together a complete digital strategy. The problem is, for a small company operator, utilizing all of the tools is virtually impossible on a small marketing budget. In reality, you don’t need a bunch of fancy tools; there are four or five steps you can take on free platforms that will allow you to begin leveling up your business’s digital impact. Optimizing your Google Business Profile, writing consistent copy for your website, and uploading new pictures regularly are just a few examples. At Tier Level, we focus on high quality content for the end user while including relevant keywords and meta-tagged digital assets.

Don’t underestimate social media

While many are drawn to the plug-and-play ROI structure of Google Ads, there is a lot to be said for the power of social media. In an increasingly transactional world, social media offers an array of opportunities to integrate your company within the community. Social media can give your business personality.

Additionally, social media offers a number of helpful tools for advertising. Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn have all built robust advertising platforms complete with linking capabilities, CTAs, and much more.

Don’t neglect your Google Business Profile

The Google Business Profile is one of your company’s strongest digital marketing assets. Google’s algorithm places significant weight on how well optimized your GBP is and will make ranking decisions accordingly. Optimizing your Google Business Profile well will increase your chances of ranking well.

But aside from just the SEO benefit, a well-optimized Google Business Profile opens up new avenues of lead generation and sales. The GBP is built with product and service offering details, CTA capability, Maps integration, sale/discount announcements, and many other tools that can help promote your product or service. So in addition to helping garner digital attention, your Google Business Profile can actually be its own business space if utilized fully.

Don’t compromise quality

This one may sound a bit inane, but the need for high-quality content cannot be overestimated, especially in an ever busier digital space. To stand out, your stuff needs to look and sound good. The visual components need to be pleasing; the written components need to be compelling. The way you present content on your SEO or social channels should tell a story and invite people into that story.

On a practical level, it’s important to make sure that written content is truly well written. Tools like Grammarly can help ensure that your captions and posts are grammatically correct, and simply resizing or reformatting pictures can help maintain high definition.

In a world where more and more people are relying on AI creation and quick-fix solutions, there is something to be said for a distinctly human voice. That’s something that won’t be lost on your audience. Consumers desire something real. Pursue high-quality content and give it to them!
